Flying high

Something I read this morning brought back memories of my first time in the sky.

In the late 1950’s I was off the ground and in the air for the first time other than being up in a tree. 😊

I flew from OK to NY. I don’t remember the flight there. The TWA Boeing 707 jet I boarded there I do remember. Several of us Army wives chartered the plane to take us from NY to Germany. I really enjoyed the flight.

After we were in the air it didn’t feel much different than if I were sitting in my house. We all were treated like royalty and the long flight did not seem long at all.

Some of us had babies and or older children. They made beds for the babies from the seats that were not occupied and the babies all slept well.

The plane stopped in Greenland to refuel. Then took us on to Frankfurt Germany where our husbands were waiting for us.

In the 1970’s I flew from AR to CO. That flight went well and I enjoyed it. Then the flight from CO back to AR had a mix up in scheduling that made the flight longer by taking us to Dallas. After a few hours in Dallas we were finally back in AR.

One of the last flights I took was from AR to OK. The plane motor was very loud and the plane rattled, shook and squeaked all the way to OKC. It was certainly nothing like flying in a big jet. I was wondering if it would make it there. Thank the Lord we made it there safely.

My final flight was from OK back to AR. The plane was quieter than the other one but, it also shook and squeaked off and on. I have not been on another plane and really hope and pray I don’t have to be.

Hugs and blessings to all who chose to visit, read Like and or comment.

I have never flown, and the only way I could possibly ever be on a plane is in case of severe injury and being life-flighted to a hospital. I would have to be unconscious or I would refuse to let them fly me.

That is pretty much the way I feel now. I prefer being grounded.

I am a commercial pilot (retired) and lots of aircraft make weird noises if they have some age on them; it’s quite normal. I love how you described the babies being put to sleep in the spare seats – you wouldn’t see that now.

Oh, Lynette I had no idea you were a pilot. I admire pilots, that is something I could never do. It was really fun flying with just the ladies and our little ones. Thank you, for your comment I enjoyed it. Hugs

That’s lovely to be named for your grandmothers. I had a nickname that was known only in my family. My uncle called me Boopsie. I’m glad it didn’t spread.

Today my hair stylist introduced herself as Mags!!! It isn’t a nickname. Her parents named her Mags. I told her I already had a friend with the same name, and we were both pleased. She gave me one of the best cuts I’ve ever had at that salon!!

You have made my day Anne. Enjoy your hair cut. Thank you for sharing this. I was named for my two grandmothers. My name is Maggie Ann and I go by Mags on my blog. The family has given me other nicknames so I answer to several of them. 😂

I don’t know how anyone can fly these days. 🤷‍♀️ It seems airline are forever facing canceled flights, long wait times, long lines in airports. I could survive a flight, but don’t know if I could handle one of those big airport kerfuffles that they show on TV. 😯

And besides what you mention there are a lot of crashes or near accidents. I don’t think I could or want to go through any of it. Hope you are doing well Anne. Hugs

During my working years I spent much of it flying to different places to meet business appointments. After a while it lost its charm and could even be a major stress when you miss connections and appointments not to mention the loss of luggage. It looks like you live in Arizona as you mention that as a destination a few times. Anywhere near Tempe?

I knew you traveled a lot and probably flew more than I can imagine. With some of the horror stories I have heard about flying now days I never again want to be on a plane. No, I live in Arkansas Ian. Hugs

I’ve been really lucky with my flying experiences over the past 6 or so years. I think the airline makes a big difference. Your trip to Germany with the other ladies and children must have been wonderful. Very happy you have such wonderful memories.

The only time I was scared was on the plane that sounded like it was going to fall apart. I’m too old and love being home and my feet on the ground to see what flying is like now days. Hugs Anneli

Flying is wonderful! The words on the stairs remind me of the song from 1968, up up and away in my beautiful, beautiful balloon. 😊

If I were younger and could fly in a huge jet I may not mind flying, but those little planes are scary. I remember that song.

The big airliners fly at 500 miles per hour, and the flight level on the way back from Michigan was 39,000 feet! That’s about 7.5 miles above Earth. 🫣😂

I don’t know how fast or how high the plane to Germany was. It was those smaller planes that did me in. The last time I flew was in the 1970’s. I am sure it is much different now. Being a charter flight back then with lots of room made it nice on the big plane to Germany.

Wow, that’s a long flight! 3.5 hours to Michigan is tough for me because Edema starts! My joints get stiff and ache… Home is goood!

I am glad you can still fly when you want to John. Sorry about the Edema. Home is always good after being away for awhile.

The boredom is the toughest part really. The edema goes away in a day or two and I take Lasix (ferosamide)to rid of excess liquid. At this point I have decided to not fly as much because of this. Christmas is the only reason to fly now until next year. Like anyone, being out of your time zone wipes me out… So tired!

Flying is not like it used to be, Mags. Passengers are now packed so tightly in these planes that most people have their knees up to their chins. It’s certainly not comfortable or healthy.
