A walk around the yard

It was a nice day here today. It was 60 degrees with sunshine and a slight breeze.

I enjoyed a walk around the yard. I filled a hole, picked up a limb and did a little trimming on a shrub. The most work I have been able to do outside in awhile.

My yard is large and sloped so just walking around it gives me good exercise. When I find something to do out there that helps my body even more.

I was sad to see that the hydrangea that was so beautiful last year suffered damage with the last unexpected way below normal temperature we had a few days ago.

Photo taken last year. 2025

Most all of the new growth on the plant is black now from freezing. I saw a little bit of green here and there so I am hoping it recovers and blooms again this year.

If you know of anything I can do to help it recover I would appreciate you sharing with me.

It’s so frustrating when cold weather damages plants. Fingers crossed that your hydrangea survives.

Thank you, it has green showing so it is coming back. Not sure it will bloom this year, but I hope it does.

Shed no tear – O, shed no tear!
The flower will bloom another year.
Weep no more – O, weep no more!

You are welcome Susan. Thank you, I think it is going to do okay. It has green leaves beginning to show. If we ever get rain I think it will really start showing many leaves.

It will recover Winn. Maybe next year perhaps lightly cover it, for protection? 🌸🌹🌻

It is showing green leaves so it is going to leaf out, not sure if it will bloom. Thank you, Joey.

Hydrangeas are gorgeous. Sorry to hear yours got too cold. My mom (who was a fantastic gardener) watered well and then waited for new growth to show before trimming off the dead parts. This may take a while; it might only recover in a month or so. I hope that helps.

Thank you, Lynette. I found a video on YouTube that said the same thing. You have given me hope by suggesting the same thing. Hugs

They normally grow well around here, or at least I see them all over the place. I have no experience with them other than photographing them a couple of times on a walk. If you are seeing new growth, the Mississippi State University guide for plants says not to cut them back or you could lose blooms. That sounds like your wait and see approach is the best plan for now.

Thank you so much for that information. Since I did see a tiny bit a green I did not want to take a chance on doing anything to stop it growing. You have made me feel better about not doing anything to the plant. I hope you are having a great day. Hugs

You are welcome! I use the Mississippi State University guide for all kinds of things related to plants. I looked for one for Arkansas, but could not find it. Arkansas does have a great resource for historic buildings that I have used frequently, though.

I am glad you found the resource for historic buildings. I will have to check out and see if I can find a source here for help with plants.

I love those flowers. Unfortunately they don’t thrive in this climate.

I am sorry they will not thrive there. My granny always had one that was gorgeous.

I’m afraid there’s not a whole lot you can do this year. Hopefully it will do better next year. A thought might be digging it and re-locating it closer to your house where it is more sheltered. I had to do that with a Crape Myrtle in order to get any blooms.

It is right in front of the house now, about three feet from the foundation. It is on the east in the front flowerbed. With my luck with plants I am afraid to move it since it did so well last year where it is. It was a new plant. Thank you for trying to help Vero, I knew if anyone could it would be you. I will let you know if any of the plant survives.

Hi Mags, I am not sure of what to do for your Hydrangea. Maybe it will come back! I hope it does. My earliest memories of my mothers garden had a pretty pink one. I can’t grow them here where I live but I love them still. I also got outside today and trimmed back some of my Shasta Daisies. They are starting to grow again which is about 2 months early for us. Very strange Winter we have had with little moisture and lots of wind. I sure hope we get some moisture soon.

Thank you so much. I am hoping it will come back, if not this season maybe next year. I love them too. I have never had a pink one and that is my first purple one. I have had blue ones in the past. We need rain badly most of the state is in draught. It is usually not windy here, but we have had a lot of wind lately. You are right that it has been a very strange winter. I hope your Shasta Daisies do well.

I love to stroll around the yard this time of year and see what is starting to come up or already blossoming :) I wish I could give you some guidance about the hydrangea, Mags, but I don’t know much about them. Maybe cut back what got zapped so the plant can focus its energy on new growth?

I sure enjoyed getting to be out and walk around the yard today. I am happy to hear you love to do that too. I thought about cutting the hydrangea back until I saw three tiny green spots and so I will wait and see if at least part of the plant recovers. I am going to check on it daily. I will keep you posted if it puts on leaves. That will be promising even if it doesn’t bloom this year. I bet your place will be amazingly beautiful when your have beautiful colored blossoms showing.

Sorry. No ideas, but sometimes you can save yourself frustration by replacing a plant or two.

That is okay. When I looked at it closely I saw three little places of green showing. I am hoping it is going to leaf out. If it does it may not bloom this year, but I will be happy if it survives. I am going to check on it daily with hope that I find leaves growing. If it doesn’t survive I will replace it.

That is a pretty flower. We did lots of pruning and will replace a few plants with more cold hardy plants.
