As a child I was never without food. My sister and I were blessed to have a hard working mother who made sure we had a roof over our head, clothes to wear and food to eat.
When my husband was drafted into the Army in 1957 we went through a tough time. The Army was very slow in getting money coming to us.
We survived for weeks on corn and tomatoes from the gardens of our landlady and a neighbor.
Mid a change in my life as an adult at one point I found myself homeless and living in my car. With a car payment and another bill to pay it took all I made to pay them.
My supervisor somehow found out that I was not eating. One night when I went to work I found a note he had left for me. The note instructed me to check the bottom drawer of his desk. He had left peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers and a candy bar for me. He did that every night until I had a place to live and food.
One night a coworker took me down to the cafeteria and bought me a meal. I was thankful to have food and oh, how wonderful it felt to eat some real nourishing food.
Later in years when fostering children, several of them had gone hungry. One little girl no older than five would hide biscuits on the window sill by her bed. As young as she was she knew to hide food for the next day even though she ate well at mealtime. That broke my heart.
Two brothers that came to live with us had survived on nothing but corn for months.
My children and I were sitting in our car eating hamburgers in town. A man knocked on the window asking for money. I did not give him any money but he would not take food. Those are the people that in my opinion are not really hungry, but want the money for other things.
It is much easier for those of us who have experienced hunger to understand what it is like to be hungry.
Just like anything else we have not experienced, we don’t fully understand how it feels.
The hungry will always be in my prayers. We should not hesitate to give food to those that are hungry if we can.
In our country there should never be anyone hungry.

Thanks for sharing your story, Mags! It is heartbreaking that there are many people in our country that go hungry. We should all help whenever we can. I also applaud you for fostering children. What a blessing you were to each one! I taught several children that were in foster homes and the change in them over time was a joy to see. Blessings!

My heart just breaks for the difficult times that you have endured and for the little ones you took in. I’m sure they were all grateful for their time with you. I pray for all those who are homeless and/or hungry now or soon to be if things do not improve. 😢

Such a moving story, Mags. It’s beautiful how God placed people in your life to care for you, and how you’ve shared that same compassion with others. May we always remember to feed the hungry and show His love in action, knowing we’re serving Him, just as He taught (Matthew 25:35).

I was shocked to know that when your husband was drafted the government didn’t look after you properly. Our veterans are the nations protectors so governments have a duty to care for their families. It seems they still need to learn that lesson today too.

My husband was getting his pay but that was barely enough to pay rent. They were slow getting my pay added to his. I hope that has improved after all those years ago. I agree the government needs to take better care of our veterans and their families. None of them should ever be homeless or without food, but sadly there are some. It hurts my heart.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Maggie. This weekend the EBT will end and many people and children of course will not be able to eat. Some 42 million Americans. It’s so terrible! I’m home from the hospital, the surgery went well, thank you so much for your prayers! 🙏🏻☺️❤️
