From the day of my birth until I was 33 years old I had moved over 50 times. We moved to different states, some of them more than once. We moved to different areas of some states several times. We even moved to different areas within some cities.
I not only lived in different states and different cities within some of those states but, I lived in one foreign country.
During my school years I so disliked all the moves. I never got to finish a school year at any of the schools I attended. We were never in one place long enough to make friends at school or try to catch up with those that were ahead of us in studies.
Somehow despite all the moves my sister and I managed to make good grades. I went back to school in my early twenties and graduated. Getting a diploma made me very happy.
It was a blessing to live in the foreign country. I really enjoyed the time there and was able to visit four other countries while living there.
After having children I was determined to raise them in one place and for them never to have to move until they were adults and chose to. I am thankful my husband and I were able to do that.
One thing I learned was how to pack in boxes, in the trunk of a car or anywhere else.
After getting all the children in our vehicle to go see family in another state each year my husband would begin packing our vehicle.
After awhile he would tell me he could get nothing else in and that it was packed to the brim. I would go out and rearrange some things and be able to get more things in with space to spare.
Every time my husband would look at me and say “How did you do that?”. Every time I would say “I have had a lot of practice.”
To this day I am not a fan of boxes and when I order something that comes in boxes I wish they didn’t. But I am thankful that they can be broken down and recycled and wish that could be done everywhere.
I pray I never have to move again until my time on this earth is done.

Ooh, this post reminded me of my mom. We’ve moved around quite a bit too, and she is very organized. Probably the reason my room looks sorta tidy most of the time. I sometimes wonder how she manages to stuff so many things in just one container, too! Nice post Mags…!

I never moved much as a child, and when we did, it was never far away from family or where we were to start. As an adult–wow I moved more times than I could have imagined. While I can pack well, I do not enjoy it and do not plan to ever do it again. Meanwhile, it is one of the reasons I am focused on clearing things out of my house that I no longer want, no longer use, and someone else can. Just saying, I have also filled up trash bags, but only when it cannot be recycled or repurposed, or used by someone else!

I am still packing but not to move. Like you I am cleaning out closets and other places and packing things that I don’t use or need any longer that someone else can use. I wish recycling was more ready available everywhere and more was done. Thank you for recycling.

i know how you feel was like that with me also..its in the blood..our ancestors’ moved around alot in order to preserve the lands so we could come back..it was hard never landing for long..but we made it lol….

Wow, Mags, we moved a few times due to my dad’s work but nothing like you did! It is hard to start in a new school for sure. I moved around NY state quite a bit in my 20s but I never became proficient at packing, lol.

Oh my you definitely beat me on moves. I had 12 moves growing up before leaving Australia. Then 8 moves in India. One in Sri Lanka, 5 in Singapore, 1 In the Philippines. Then after returning to Australia 6 but we are in a retirement home now and have no intention for moving again. Se we had 33 moves against your 50. It is not fun to move.

One thing for sure Ian, your moves sure allowed you to share some great stories that I have enjoyed reading over the years. I am happy that we both finally settled and hopefully will not have to move again. I agree it is no fun to move.

Have also moved and moved- tough and needless at times- but no option on other occasions- certainly agree on learning how to pack efficiently is great!

I must be a nomad at heart. We moved many times as a kid, then I joined the service after graduation and I moved more than most people do in their whole period of service. Then my husband and I moved about ten times, and now we live in a motorhome and move to a different place every 2-4 months! Wow, that really makes me wonder what else I’ve done in my 64 years but pack and move, lol. But of course, I have.

The way you are traveling now would have been more fun I think than all the moving I did was. Reasons for a lot of my moves were due to sad circumstances in life. In my 20;s I enjoyed fishing and hunting. The times we camped on the river I loved. We didn’t have a camper or tents and I totally enjoyed the outdoors. Only four of my moves were military moves.

Oh for sure-I wish we could have been in this thing a long time ago because those moves were definitely not as much fun. One move was in the heat of summer-that was the worst!!

BTW nothing wrong with being a Nomad. I think my stepdad must have been since he was the one that moved us so much.

I have a restless spirit I guess. I wonder if we want lo know when to purchase our “forever” home or if we will keep wandering even after that.
I’m glad you have found your happy place and don’t have to move anymore. There’s a peace in that.
