Confusing Whistle

While reading blog posts this morning for some reason a blessing from the past came to mind. It gave me a chuckle when I remembered the first time it happened.

One day I let my little companion of sixteen and a half years outside to do his usual morning of checking out the yard. When he had been out longer than usual I decided to check on him.

When I went out I could not see him anywhere. Instead of walking all around the yard to look for him I whistled. After a time or two of whistling which I had never done before I saw him coming toward me.

A few days later I went outside to get my little buddy. I was walking toward him when he and I both heard a whistle that sounded pretty much like my whistle.

He looked at me but didn’t come to me. He just sat like he didn’t know what to do. I’m pretty sure he could tell it was not me whistling since I was talking to him.

Finally I realized it was a mocking bird whistling that was sitting in a tree beside the driveway.

After my little buddy went to The Rainbow Bridge I would walk out and whistle and the mocking bird would whistle back to me. We would carry on whistling conversations for a minute or so.

I have not whistled in awhile, but mocking birds nested in one of my small trees the last couple of years and I now have several mocking birds to enjoy.

Just another one of those little things that never stops blessing.

Maybe some day I will think to whistle again and see if that mocking bird is still around.

Wow, that’s beautiful. I sometimes prank other birds by mimicking their calls, its fun to see them trying to figure out where the sound is coming from. I’ve never seen a mockingbird in real life, I would love to have a whistling conversation with them one day!

Thank You! You mimicking the birds sounds like fun. It would be nice to sing like a bird, but I can only whistle. :) I hope some time you will get to see and hear a mocking bird. Around here they mimic car alarms, cats and some other things.

They seem very intelligent, one day I’ll see one. I’m certain people panic when they hear car alarms! 😂

When I was growing up we had a white cocatoo parrot that had learned to imitate my mom’s voice and it was always calling our neighbour to talk at the fence between us like my mother used to do in the 1940’s. When my mother didn’t appear the neighbour would think something had happened to mom and rush over to see if she was OK. He used to call the chickens like my father did at feeding time and when they’d get close enough he’d shriek in a loud voice and see them take off in fright. He’d also ask for food and if he was being bad and dad shouted at him he’d shout “whatsthematter.”

It is not easy with dentures, but I am thinking of trying it at some point.
